Happy First Birthday Princess Anaís! (Smash cake shoot)

Happy Birthday to my first baby, my beautiful princess, mamas girl!!!

I could go on, and on about this beautiful soul. However, on today’s post we will go behind the scenes and talk about her smash-cake shoot.

I take all of my photos using the iPhone 8+ camera. I also use a few different apps to edit, and brighten my photos. However, I can’t forget my amazing Instagram husband. He helps behind-the-scenes and occasionally gets in front of the camera with me. I love and appreciate you babe!

Back to business. How did we decide on a color scheme? I browsed Pinterest (who doesn’t go here for inspo- hahah!!) and fell in love with the idea of mixing light blue, teal, and purple. Next, on the list was her outfit. I contemplated giving her a tutu because let’s face it, we all know I’m obsessed with them, but I wanted to try something new. I went on Etsy and typed in “blue, teal, and purple” into the search bar. An adorable, ruffled bloomer was the first item that popped up. I fell in love. The bloomer incorporated all three colors and had lace accents, it couldn’t be more perfect for the look I was going for. I also added purple beads to pull the look together. Simple is best! I knew she was going to make a mess, so I wanted her to be free while doing so.

Color scheme? Check, outfit? Check, Props? I had no idea what to get or where to start. My husband and I took a trip to Dollar Tree (our favorite place to buy photo props) and found a few simple but lovely, wall decorations, and some matching latex balloons. All the props from her shoot were purchased from Dollar Tree, as most of them are. I learned you can create something beautiful out of nothing, and you don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars to express your creativity!

Now that we have our color scheme, outfit, and props, we needed to decide on a cake. My older sister Jenn, is the baker in our family and owns Cutesy Cakes by Jenn. Last year she made a wonderful, woodland themed cake for my baby shower. So it was no surprise that she wanted to do Anaís smash cake. In fact, Jenn is so excited to be celebrating her first nieces birthday, she’s doing all of the baking for her first birthday party, including a ginormous birthday cake. I have to say, I’m grateful I have her. But what design were we going to do? After a few text messages, screenshots, and Pinterest scrolling, she came up with this adorable, colorful, and delicious, giant cupcake. Do you see these colors? So vibrant and lovely!! I’m obsessed and so was Anaís!

The princess awoke at 9am and we sang happy birthday. She enjoyed it so much, it’s as if she knew exactly what we were singing to her!! I then made her favorite breakfast, she watched Trolls (her new favorite movie), I then gave her a bath, and she and dad took a nap. As they both slept, I cleaned up and set-up the living room for her shoot. I was not mentally prepared for the mess that was to come, but I’m glad dad was there to help me clean up! I thought putting a white tablecloth on the floor would be a great idea. It made clean up a breeze and brought out the vibrant colors. I was right! 🙂

Right before she dived into her cake, we sang happy birthday to our princess again. I can’t explain to you the crazy mess she made or how happy she was! So here are a few pictures to explain!

The aftermath was intense. There was cake all over the walls in her hair, on our couch. She got cake happy! Hahah! But I’m so glad we did this, I feel it’s every baby’s right of passage 🙂
